The new St David’s in Cardiff has boosted the capital to sixth place in the top 10 of the most popular shopping cities in the UK.

The research published by Experian, confirms that the new shopping centre in the heart of the city has helped cement Cardiff’s position in the UK leaderboard.

Steven Madeley, centre director at St David’s said: “When we first set about developing St David’s, we had aspirations for the city to rise up the retail rankings. It was predicted that we would reach eighth place by 2011, so to secure sixth place only one month after opening is excellent news for us and the city.

“We are proud St David’s has been able to accelerate Cardiff to this position so early on.”
The Experian research has also predicted that Cardiff will overtake Liverpool in the retail rankings by 2014 making it fifth only to London, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester.
Mr Madeley continued: “By investing in the retail offering in Cardiff we are putting Wales’ capital city on the map among some of the key players throughout the UK. Footfall in the first week of opening was 1.4 million and it continues to be very busy as we head towards Christmas.  We’ve had excellent feedback from people who have previously had to travel over the Severn Bridge to spend their earnings now committing to staying in Wales to shop.

“On the back of this excellent news, we see this as just the beginning for St David’s and Cardiff and are very excited about what the future holds.”
