Park Up in City Centre

St David's has today confirmed the pricing structure for Cardiff's first ever 24 hour secure car park; which will house more than 2,000 cars.

The developers behind St David's are providing Cardiff with two new car parks which will allow shoppers to park for two hours for only £2.00 and for only £1.00 after 5pm.

St David's Partnership, a joint venture between Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres, is building a new multi storey car park above the shopping centre, which will house some 2000 parked cars and a new car park underneath John Lewis that will be able to accommodate 500 cars.

'Parking is of huge importance when developing a shopping centre of such size and scale' said Steven Madeley, Centre Director at St David's. He said: 'The new car parks will make shopping in Cardiff even more appealing, as well as encourage a shift in shopping habits. The multi storey car park above St David's will be open 24 hours a day. The reduced rates at certain times at both car parks fit in well with our plans to have extended opening hours and provide safe parking for people looking to enjoy what the city centre has to offer at night.'

Both the St David's and John Lewis car parks will be controlled by St David's Partnership and, as a result, car parking costs will be at a reduced rate compared with other car parks throughout the city centre.

Mr Madeley said: 'We are working hard to keep costs down to help shoppers enjoy the whole experience that little bit more and to encourage more people to visit the city centre once working hours are over.'

'We are providing the city with our first car park; underneath John Lewis, earlier than planned. The 500 space car park will be ready for the store's opening on 24 September. We have worked hard to ensure that we are making the shopping centre and Cardiff city centre easily accessible for shoppers'

To facilitate access for shoppers to the roads into and around St David's, David's Street car park will be demolished this month to widen the roads therefore limiting the chances of congestion when the centre opens in October. This area will then be landscaped to enable the space to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

The car parks have been carefully designed to be a welcoming, safe and bright environment for all visitors. Shoppers will also be able to take advantage of a car valeting area. Painted floors define individual parking spaces, while ceilings and coloured walls combined with high quality lighting will make the St David's car parks first choice within the city.

Cardiff Council leader, Rodney Berman, said: "Cardiff needs to be open for shoppers and these very reasonable short stay charges will make car parking in the city centre accessible for those wanting to access the new St David's 2 development, as well as all the other wonderful shopping opportunities the city offers.

"The introduction of reduced evening rates will also help boost the city's evening economy, with visitors not just shopping but enjoying some of Cardiff's main attractions and restaurants

"As well as car parking we have strengthened public transport links around the city centre to ensure that Cardiff is very much open to all and this autumn the new Pentwyn park and ride scheme will open which, with more than 1,000 spaces, will offer a cheaper option for those who wish to travel by car and stay in the city centre for longer periods.

"When St David's 2 opens later this year Cardiff will be able to boast one of the most exciting retail destinations in the country and I am pleased that measures are in place for people to take full advantage of the exciting facilities we have on offer."
