St David’s Dewi Sant is adopting an Environmental approach

We have created a ‘Green Wall’ that we have on display on the Eastside in our centre to inform our customers of what we are implementing on site to improve on environmental issues, and to hopefully encourage others to adopt an eco-friendly approach.

We have reduced our carbon footprint by over 10% we are in process of re-fitting our lighting systems and so far have reduced our footprint by 12 tonnes of CO2 a year, we have also introduced a green roof area, we have beehives on site, plus there are many, many more things in the pipeline.

Helps reduce the decline in the Bee population
Bees are pollinators vital to our food chain; one third of the food we eat would not be available without bees
Honey, pollen and wax can be used for nutritional, medicinal, craft and manufacturing applications

Green Roof Benefits
Biodiversity - Green roofs can provide important refuges for wildlife in urban areas.
Water - Green roofs can significantly reduce the surface run off volumes and rates of rainfall leaving roofs.
Green roofs also improve the quality of water and although the amount of water is reduced it is possible to rainfall harvest from roofs that have been greened.
Thermal Performance - Green roofs have been shown to significantly reduce the need for air conditioning in summer and can provide a degree of insulation in winter, has reduced the amount of our heating and cooling by 5%
Sound Insulation - The combination of soil, plants and trapped layers of air within green roof systems can act as a sound insulation barrier.
Green roofs have now been shown to double if not triple the life of waterproofing membranes beneath the green roof
Air Quality – airborne particles and pollutants are filtered from the atmosphere by the substrates and vegetation on a green roof

MRF (Materials recycling facility)
New waste streams: Hard plastic, paper, materials.
Enhanced streams: Coat Hangers, Food, Soft plastic, Cardboard, Metals (Cans)
Diverts Waste from Landfill: In the first month of soft operation we diverted 11657Kgs from landfill.
Decreases Carbon Footprint: in the region of about 1T in May (Methane reduction, Transport etc.)
