The Projects

Techniquest

st john's churchyard

As part of the St David's Partnership commitment to improving public spaces in Cardiff the St John's Churchyard situated at the northern end of the Hayes was re-vitalised.

Work started on the project in January 2007 and lasted for 11 weeks. The project transformed the churchyard gardens into a landscaped public area with new seating, paving and lighting. A new public route was created through the gardens and the existing graveyard preserved within its own enclosure.

The new churchyard garden opened to the public in Spring 2007.

public realm & highway improvements

Through a combination of innovative and inspiring public art and an increase in landscaped spaces for people to relax in, our aim is to draw more people to this area of the city centre. But we are not looking to completely reinvent the wheel - we want to draw on what makes Cardiff special already, including the arcades and the finishes and materials used. Our vision for the Hayes is truly aspirational and, through this, we hope to make it the Cardiff equivalent of a bustling European piazza.

Through the scheme, we aim to create a space for the people who live, work and shop in Cardiff to be proud of and enjoy spending time in.

Safle (formally Public Art Wales), have been appointed as consultants and project managers, as part of a £1.5m public art investment and their experience and creativity will help us to breathe new life into this area of the city centre.

Sitting at the heart of an improved transport network, the scheme has delivered 2500 spaces in two new, start-of-the-art car parks, better access and road crossing for pedestrians, safe cycle parking and cycle lanes along with convenient new bus stops on Bute Terrace, David Street, Churchill Way and in front of the Marriott Hotel.
