Newly Nude with Nars

Tue 10 Feb 2015 - posted by St David's Blogger

The New Year always means a new look and what easier way to bring your look up to date than with new makeup. NARS is known within the beauty world as being iconic and innovative, (creating cult classics, such as the recent Andy Warhol collection) and we had the opportunity to sit down with Nars Account Manager and Makeup Artist Clayton Reid to get his insider knowledge and top beauty tips.

Clayton has been with NARS for the past 3 years and was self-taught. His career highlights included an appearance on Italian Vogue online and meeting NARS founder Francois Nars. You can find Clayton in the John Lewis Beauty Hall and backstage at London Fashion Week later this month. Here Clayton revealed his best beauty and makeup advice for the season and what every woman needs in her makeup bag.

The new Spring Summer collection from Nars is all about Nudes. What is your favourite ‘nude’ colour and product and do you have any tips for choosing the perfect nude tone?

The Spring colour collection is exciting and very different from anything we have done before. Francois Nars (NARS Creative Director and Founder) chose Tilda Swinton as his muse and the face for the campaign, and I find her ethereal beauty and edgy look works so well with this collection. One of the inspirations behind the collections was the "no make-up" make-up look that is trending backstage at fashion weeks.

Belle de Jour Sheer Lipstick is my personal all-time favourite nude lipstick, and it’s also a favourite of Kim Kardashian! I'm really looking forward to layering the new lip gloss Guyane on top to create a beautiful milky nude colour.

My top tip for choosing the perfect nude is to choose one that flatters your skin tone and balances your make-up. A nude lip will always look amazing with a more daring smokey eye.

Do you prefer to work with nudes or bold colours? Why?

I particularly enjoy working with bolder colours as I have always been inspired by more extreme and daring make-up looks. For me there is nothing better than seeing a woman having the confidence to try a more edgy look,  however I'm excited for this new launch, especially as sometimes bare, clean, fresh and polished make-up looks can be more challenging for an artist to re-create. I'm excited for the challenge!

What makeup product should every woman invest in?

Every woman should invest in a good set of brushes. When using great tools, your make-up possibilities are endless. You will notice that your make-up has a much better finish. It will look flawless and professional.

Do you have any advice on how to fake a healthy winter glow?

NARS have great complexion products and amazing colours, but for me our best kept secret is our skincare. The Optimal Brightening Concentrate is a radiance boosting serum that instantly gives a gorgeous glow to the skin thanks to the exclusive Light Reflecting Complex, but it also works wonders over time to replenish and revive dull skin. My tip with this product, especially if your skin lacks radiance is to warm the product in the palm of your hands and press it on to cleansed skin before moisturiser. It can also work as a quick fix when pressed on top of foundation to refresh the complexion.

If you had 5 minutes to do basic makeup, what features would you focus on and do you have a secret weapon?

I would create a radiant complexion very quickly using NARS primer, new All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation, a touch of concealer and powder, and spend the rest of the time I had focusing on the lip, cheek and eyes with our iconic 3 in 1 Multiple stick. One of my personal favourites is Na Pali Coast, it is a gorgeous shimmering rose peach colour that looks great on most skin tones and can be used on eyes, cheeks and lips. This product is also great if your time is limited or if you are travelling as you don't have to carry much with you. You can create a beautiful make-up look quickly by using the Multiple – a must-have for every makeup bag!
