Vivienne Westwood AW15/16

The AW 15/16 collection is a tribute to HRH Prince Charles, drawing inspiration from the Prince’s clothing and charity work and even using his picture on a graphic tee. In addition to this, the designer’s aspiration was to ensure a number of the items were unisex, in order to make the line more sustainable and recyclable - “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” John Constable’s painting ‘Weymouth Bay’ and its English, muddy tones inspired the collection’s colour palette. Edwardian interiors and traditional fabric weaves, such as herringbones used in different scales and techniques influence the pattern designs. We’ve chosen our top three looks which demonstrate the key styling and pattern trends for the next season.
The emphasis of the first look is on pattern clash. The checked pattern on the trousers and jacket are centred on the same stripe pattern and size, but the primary and secondary colours vary for both items. The blanket coat has a far busier pattern with a bolder thicker stripe, which when paired together gives a bold look. The colour scheme is centred on a dark, more autumnal pallet, drawing on muddy browns and mustard tones.
In this look we see the prominence of clashing pattern, this time using tartan fabrics. The trousers feature a tight narrow tartan experimenting with a more colourful palette. The jacket however uses a larger tartan featuring similar white and grey colours, with the addition of a number of browns and black. In addition to pattern, importance is placed on layering, with the knit cardigan introducing a ‘Country Gent’ look, whilst continuing the clashing themes.
This final look places the emphasis on size contrast. The trousers are less-tailored and more slouchy than in the previous looks whilst incorporating a cropped leg and a subtle check. The jacket is a play on the classic single-breasted blazer but draws on large lapels to balance the slimming effect of the jacket’s stripe. The look is again layered with the use of a navy blue round neck jumper and teamed with a lighter blue shirt with an oversized collar. All items feature various dark blues and subtle pattern.
