Art Trail

St David's Public Art Programme is a series of art projects funded by the St David's Partnership as part of the regeneration of Cardiff City Centre. These projects highlight the vibrancy of the public realm and quality of life in Cardiff as well as the high standard of cultural provision being developed across Wales.

Central Cross Over – Architectural Flooring Detail

Designed by principal architects ‘Benoy’ to bring a sense of Welsh place to the centre the architectural flooring detail at the central crossover section on the ground floor of Grand Arcade showcases two famous lines from the Welsh National Anthem.

TRA MÔR YN FUR I’R BUR HOFF BAU, O BYDDED I’R HENIAITH BARHAU.

Medieval Town Wall

Medieval Town Wall

Celebrating the medieval history of the city and commemorating the line of the Medieval Town Wall that stretches close by are complementary, contemporary artworks circling the glazed area in the roof and the floor of the intersection between St David’s Way and Town Wall Malls.

The design for the overhead piece created by Kathy Dalwood was inspired by the medieval history of the site and early 20th Century sculptural carvings found on Cardiff’s City Hall and Law Courts that reference Cardiff’s history as a trading port to the world, including ships, exotic fruit, and Roman imagery.

Anne Smyth’s floor design incorporates the graphic simplicity of medieval imagery, in particular symbols that reference the use of the site as a trading centre since medieval times. The perimeter of the design is laid six sections of a contrasting roughly finished stone, in the pattern of the Town Wall. Six breaks in the design suggest the six gates of the Town Wall. The floor is made up of a natural, almost monotone, palate of stones to compliment the strength of the rich, warm, yellow limestone that makes up the surrounding flooring. Interest is added to the piece through a variety of textured finishes on the stones and the inclusion of glass features that represent medieval coins stored in the National Museum and Gallery of Wales.

Identities : Post Secret

Identities : Post Secret

The Identities project was created to infuse a strong local and national character into the design and appearance of St David’s, Cardiff and introduce elements that are specific to the life and culture of Wales and it’s Capital. These works focus on real and anecdotal historic narrative or contemporary expressions of the culture and life of Cardiff and Wales as a whole. St David’s Partnership engaged a small team of artists to develop proposals for works that reference the fascinating history of this part of the city. In collaboration with the Welsh Royal College of Music and Drama, Jane Edden developed a series of bespoke bollards located along The Hayes. The bollards contain within them scenes developed and modeled by students of the college and passers-by can view these miniature worlds by peeking through holes in the 12 special posts.

Shoal

Shoal

On the eastern side of the centre the exterior façade of the multi-storey car park ramp has been animated using contemporary media; creating a sense of drama, spectacle and playfulness. This interactive art piece is a series of vertically parallel channels housing 90,000 LED lights that illuminate to represent the movements of shoals of fish in the ocean. The lights are driven by a clever-piece of custom built software linked to a computer station and a series of sensors through which the public can influence the lights in the artwork via sound or movement.

Alliance

Alliance

Visually, ‘Alliance’ seems to be suspended in time, like a freeze-frame image of an oversized toy in precarious balance between Cardiff's new library and the historical streets of the area. This monumental work brings together a large inclined arrow and a circular hoop filled with liquid that rises and descends with the movement of the tides. At night, projectors from inside the arrow beam down text in Welsh and English by Cardiff-based writer Peter Finch evoking the layers of Cardiff’s urban history and present. The bodies of passers-by will act as screens thus symbolically enveloping visitors to the city centre in Cardiff’s progress through time.
